Write for Holy Ground

Are you a Christian, have a PhD, and are interested in writing popular theology for a wide audience? We are always looking for new academic authors to join our project.

Three major benefits to writing theology at Holy Ground:

  1. Your writing will likely help thousands of people per month who struggle in their Christian faith. If your academic work has often felt separated from helping others, this can be a welcome change.
  2. Holy Ground offers you the chance to get your name and published material into the public square (every article links to an author page). This can be a welcome change from the academic world where great thinkers regularly work in solitude and retire relatively unknown.
  3. Becoming an author at Holy Ground puts you in league with a small but passionate cadre of theologians who strive to live a life of grounded adventure. This is not a trivial thing. Everybody needs a gang.

Qualifications

Holy Ground is particular about who it publishes. For this reason, most applications are not accepted. Potential academic authors are expected to possess these qualities:

  • Membership in a Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, or some other ancient tradition that is less affected by either Protestant/Enlightenment rationalism or postmodern deconstruction.
  • A mature, active, and nurtured Christian faith. Your theology should be in line with historic orthodox creeds like the Apostle's Creed and the Nicene Creed.
  • A PhD (not a DMin) in a field of Christian scholarship from a reputable academic institution. Typically the doctorate should be in theology, philosophy, history, biblical studies, or a related field. At this time we are not accepting applicants with doctorates in interpersonal fields like Christian counseling, missions, etc.
  • A heart for people who are struggling. The main mission of Holy Ground is to help everyday people establish and develop a real, living unity with God. While we are happy to pay you for your work, the money should not be your main motivation.
  • The skill to write quality theology for non-Christians. You should be able to take sometimes complex, sometimes boring theological concepts and translate them into accessible language that average non-churchgoing people can read and comprehend, and to so write at an efficient speed.
  • A grace to be ecumenical. Holy Ground is an interdenominational project, so you should be able to see the wisdom in churches and denominations other than your own, and thus to write content for them. For example, some of the articles we write are for a Catholic or Pentecostal audience, so you should be able to write theology inside of a Catholic or Pentecostal framework. This does not mean you need to compromise your theological convictions. There is a balance to be found.
  • 12 articles per year: You must be able to commit to a minimum of 1 article per month, 12 articles per year, averaged per quarter. More than this is welcome. As this is remote work, your weekly schedule is flexible.

Financial compensation

Holy Ground is able to offer financial compensation for the content you might produce. Our structure is currently pay-per-word, and at a rate that is commensurate with other academic writing gigs.
